It's Not about Me — It's about Jesus
Jerome’s voice rings with determination as he declares, “God is first in my life. Nothing can take that away.”
At 56, Jerome looks back on years of loss, intense frustration and pain — years he tried to forget through a suicide attempt last spring. But, he says, “By the grace of God, I’m back in Oklahoma City and back at City Rescue Mission.”
Jerome credits his case manager at City Rescue Mission for being a “big brother” to him and for helping him build a strong relationship with Jesus Christ!
“You know that part about Jesus being a shepherd?” Jerome asks. “The sheep cried out and the shepherd went to him. If I stay silent, no one will hear me.” That’s Jerome’s message to others at City Rescue Mission — speak up! Learn! Don’t dwell on the past, but stay in the present. “It’s the only day God has promised us,” Jerome says.
Just days after Hurricane Katrina demolished cities along the Gulf Coast, an evacuee wandered into City Rescue Mission. “I told him, Don’t worry, you’ll be all right. They’ll help you here. I helped him find the shower and some clean clothes.”
Thoughts of suicide are far from Jerome’s mind these days. “It’s not about me. It’s about Jesus. It’s about what I can do for others.”
