Litter Blitz 2008

A team of more than 80 homeless men and women, City Rescue Mission staff and students from UCO participated in Litter Blitz 2008, a month-long effort established by OKC Beautiful to reduce the effect of litter on our community.  The team picked up trash in 42 city blocks between Main Street, SW 3rd Street, Walker Ave neand Western Avenue.  Everyone worked quickly and we were able to spread our helping hands further to clean even more blocks! Over 115 trash bags were filled!

“We are excited to be part of this huge effort to beautify our city. The homeless population is often looked at as just a burden. This is a chance to thank our community for being so giving to the poor and homeless and to City Rescue Mission,” said Rev. Tom Jones, president/CEO of City Rescue Mission. “We consider it an honor to do our part in making Oklahoma City the best it can be, a beautiful place to live and work.”

An Easter Celebration for the Homeless

Homeless children and their parents throughout Oklahoma City joined us the Thursday before Easter for an evening packed with crafts, games, an inflatable moonwalk, Easter egg hunt and photos with the Easter bunny himself!  The families enjoyed this fun-filled event celebrating the traditions of Easter and Jesus’ loving sacrifice.  Thanks to many compassionate donors, every child staying at the Mission also received a beautiful new Easter outfit to wear to this Easter Eggstravaganza and on Easter.

Sunday morning, Mission guests and students remembered Christ’s death and resurrection at a special chapel service and breakfast, where they were treated to Easter baskets filled with a Bible, personal care items and candy.  Bridge to Life students recognized what Christ has done in their lives by singing Crown Him with Many Crowns for men, women and children in our emergency shelter.

Hearts of Hope Brings Hope to Homeless Women and Families

When women in Oklahoma City learned our emergency women and families shelter was full and homeless mothers and children were sleeping on mattress on the floor, they responded overwhelmingly to our Hearts of Hope campaign to raise funds to renovate and expand this shelter.  We are so grateful for our Hearts of Hope Tea attendees who continue to live and give from their compassionate hearts!

Together, they donated more than $100,000—$17,000 over our goal—to fund this much-needed project.

The afternoon event, held February 12 at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, is the ninth of its kind for City Rescue Mission.

"This overflow of blessing will be used for additional improvements for the women and families emergency shelter.  As soon as this project is completed we'll invite all our Hearts of Hope guests to come see the renovation," says Barbara Green, Hearts of Hope founder and 2008 co-chair.

Christmas Memories

City Rescue Mission hosted Christmas dinner and chapel for over 500 homeless and needy guests.  After dinner and chapel, around 500 residents and guests at the Mission received special gifts wrapped just for them.  Long-time Mission volunteers J.D. and Jackie Simpson play Santa and Mrs. Claus each Christmas.

A Thanksgiving to Remember

November 20, City Rescue Mission distributed nearly 400 Thanksgiving baskets to needy families with the help of scores of volunteers.  Over 500 homeless and low-income men, women and children shared Thanksgiving dinner in our dining hall on Tuesday, November 21, and gathered with us in our chapel service to praise God for His many blessings.

Mission of Hope Banquet

More than 650 City Rescue Mission partners in ministry helped kick off our annual appeal campaign at our Mission of Hope 2007 banquet, October 2, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. After hearing guest entertainer, Mark Lowry, a moving testimony from a Bridge to Life recovery graduate, and a performance of the City Rescue Mission choir, attendees gave generously to raise over $358,000 toward the campaign’s $1.8 million goal.

This yearly event challenges our staff, board, volunteers and financial partners to be obedient to God’s call to care for and lift up the homeless and poor.
